THE SCIENCE
Why this actually works
EFT can sound too simple to be real. Tapping on a few points while you feel something? But there is a serious body of research behind it, and once you understand the mechanism, the simplicity is exactly the point. Here is the science, in plain language.
What EFT is doing in your body
EFT, or tapping, combines gentle stimulation of acupressure points with focused attention on a feeling or memory. That sounds small, but it sets off a real, measurable chain of events in your nervous system. It is acupressure, nervous-system regulation, and belief change, working at the same time.
The short version: tapping tells your brain it is safe, even while you are thinking about something that usually feels unsafe. And when your brain gets that signal, it can finally do something it cannot do in a state of threat. It can update.
How it works, step by step
Researchers like Dr David Feinstein have mapped out the cascade. It looks like this.
1. The signal reaches the brain
Tapping on acupressure points sends calming signals to the brain, including to the amygdala, your threat detector. Harvard Medical School researchers studying these points with brain imaging found that stimulating them reduces amygdala arousal remarkably fast, sometimes within seconds.Harvard Medical School fMRI research on acupoint stimulation (Hui et al., 2000)
2. The stress response drops
As the threat signal lowers, your body shifts out of fight or flight and into the parasympathetic state, where healing happens. A randomised controlled trial found a 24% drop in the stress hormone cortisol after a single EFT session, significantly more than rest or talk therapy.Church et al., 2012
3. The memory becomes updatable
With the body calm but the memory active, the brain enters a window where an old emotional learning can actually be rewritten. This is called memory reconsolidation, and it is why the change holds instead of just fading.Feinstein, 2025
4. The tapping is the active ingredient
This is not just placebo. Dismantling studies, where researchers remove the tapping and keep everything else, show that the acupressure component itself genuinely contributes to the result.Church and Stapleton, 2018
What the studies show
EFT is one of the most researched modalities in energy psychology, with more than 100 studies behind clinical EFT.
Anxiety
A meta-analysis of fourteen studies found EFT produced significant reductions in anxiety, with a large effect size.Clond, 2016
PTSD
A meta-analysis of randomised trials found a very large effect for EFT on post-traumatic stress, with many people seeing relief in as few as four to ten sessions.Sebastian and Nelms, 2017
Depression
A meta-analysis of twenty studies found large reductions in depressive symptoms following EFT.Nelms and Castel, 2016
Your genes are not your destiny
In a pilot study, a single tapping session shifted the expression of 72 genes linked to stress, immunity and inflammation, with some changes still present a day later. Small study, but a remarkable signal of how deep this work reaches.Maharaj, 2016
The science explains the steps. My method is the order.
The research tells us what EFT can do. The Demi Millbank EFT Method is how I sequence it so it works as powerfully as possible, every time.
I calm the threat system first
The studies are clear that nothing updates while the amygdala is firing. So before anything else, I regulate your nervous system and bring you into safety. This is the step most tapping skips, and it is why so much tapping does not hold.
I use that window to update the real root
With your body calm and the memory live, I use clinical EFT and the reconsolidation window to update the belief underneath. I go deeper than the standard techniques, to the things people have never said out loud, because I hold the safety for it.
Then manifestation becomes biology
Your brain predicts your future from your past. Once the old fear-based prediction is updated, your attention and your body can finally orient toward what you want instead of what you fear. That is the moment expansion stops being wishful thinking.
Safety, depth, and the right order
Most tapping works on the surface and skips the regulation. My method does the opposite. I lead with safety because the science says change is not possible without it. I go to the actual root because that is where the brain stores the learning that needs updating. And I sequence the manifestation work to come last, because your nervous system has to believe it is safe before it can move toward more.
That is the whole difference. Same powerful tool, used in the order your brain is actually built for.
The science gives you the what. The method gives you the how.
EFT calms the stress response, lowers cortisol, and helps update emotional learnings. The bridge from there to manifestation is my own framework, grounded in how the brain predicts the future from the past.
